Class Descriptions

PLEASE NOTE: DROP IN’S ARE WELCOME TO ANY CLASS FOR $12; Soundbath is $15. During this COVID era, our class size is limited to 10 students; priority goes to those who have emailed the teacher in advance. 

Our teachers are here to serve you – please share with them any issues (physical or otherwise) so that they are able to support you in your yoga practice.

YOGA – INTERMEDIATE.  In this alignment based yoga class, students learn a system of alignment from the feet up and each class incorporates asana (the physical postures), as well as yogic breathing. Poses in each class are specifically chosen to be appropriate for the class level.  Nancy emphasizes core strength as a way to support the low back and to maintain integrity in the poses, and her goal is to foster a lifelong and sustainable practice that will support both emotional and physical health.

Students build strength through a mindful, focused, and carefully sequenced practice that emphasizes proper foundation in every pose. Each class has a different focus and theme; we may work on backbends, twists, forward bends, balancing poses, hip openers, inversions (handstands, etc.), flow sequences…  The goal is not to adapt to a set routine, but to keep the body challenged and the mind alert.

In more flowing “vinyasa” sequences, students learn to maintain proper alignment both in the pose, and moving from one pose to the next.  We also practice holding poses for longer periods in order to move more deeply into all aspects of a pose. The classes are taught in sessions, with each class building on the one before. Because of the session format, students have the opportunity to move safely into more challenging poses, and Nancy provides individual attention and assistance. Although Nancy’s classes are taught in sessions, drop-ins are welcome.

YOGA FOR BEGINNERS. This one hour class is designed for beginners – those who are new to yoga and those who have not exercised in a while.  Students focus on proper alignment and breathing.  Neither “gentle” nor “power” yoga, students develop strength and flexibility gradually in a supportive setting with lots of individual attention. In more flowing “vinyasa” sequences, you will learn to maintain proper alignment both in the pose, and moving from one pose to the next, the transitions between poses being an important – an often neglected aspect of vinyasa practice.  Class pass or session (with Nancy).

EXTRA GENTLE YOGA. This class provides a gentle practice that emphasizes strength and flexibility throughout the body in a safe and sustainable way.  We focus on alignment, breath, and movement, and explore modifications that can be made for your body and needs – including extensive use of props.  We work on balance in every class – an important skill for our everyday lives! Students will leave class with tools to sustain a yoga practice for many years to come.  This class is appropriate for beginners, but all levels are welcome.

YOGA FOR ALL LEVELS. Come join us for an all-levels dynamic-gentle class, a chance to breathe and move, release the tensions of the day and prepare for new endeavors.  This class will be a complete body workout, with emphasis on the breath and safe alignment. In more flowing “vinyasa” sequences, you will learn to maintain proper alignment both in the pose and moving from one pose to the next, the transitions between poses being an important – and often neglected aspect – of vinyasa practice. Alignment, breath, movement, as well as longer holds in the poses make an all levels class suitable for everyone.

STOTT PILATES MAT CLASS – Intermediate/Beginners. This class helps you develop strength and stability and can be modified to meet your specific needs. The focus is on the principles of breathing, concentration and coordination in a friendly, supportive environment. While experience in mat STOTT Pilates is not required, the Intermediate Class is geared to those who know the basic Pilates principles. The Beginner Class will teach those principles (Beginner class will return May 6, 2021).  Please join us! 

HOLY YOGA. This one hour, alignment based yoga class is set to Christian music and combines breath work, movement and meditation on God’s Word. It is an all-levels dynamic-gentle class that encourages experiential worship within a compassionate, caring environment where students can connect to Christ and each other.

YOGA FLOW (also known as VINYASA).  Vinyasa yoga is a practice in which fairly constant movement is synchronized with breath.  Ranging from a gentle and therapeutic pace to a vigorous practice, students are challenged and energized in this class, with time at the end of class for relaxation. Students build strength and flexibility through carefully sequenced and focused movements. This class places importance on alignment, breath, and movement with modifications appropriate for individual fitness levels. All Levels and Intermediate, depending on the class.

HEATED VINYASA.  This energetic class is practiced in a heated room.  Through the connection of breath and movement, you will elongate the muscles, build strength and work balance.  Enjoy fun tunes and variations of core work combined with traditional yoga poses.  You will sweat and leave feeling refreshed and invigorated.  Modifications and rest breaks are offered.  Some yoga experience is recommended for this class.  Class Pass and First Class is FREE.

CHAIR YOGA/EXTRA GENTLE. Chair yoga is a gentle practice in which postures are performed while seated and/or with the aid of a chair. Just like a regular yoga practice, chair yoga increases flexibility, strength and body awareness. When standing poses are included in a chair yoga class, the chair is used to help with and improve balance. Chair yoga may also include pranayama breathing techniques and meditation to promote focus, mental clarity and relaxation. Just about any standard yoga pose can be modified for chair yoga, including backbends, twists, hip openers and forward folds.  This is a wonderful class for beginners and/or those with balance issues or disabilities.  All Levels. Chair Yoga will return May 4, 2021.

YIN/THERAPY BALLS. Yin Yoga offers a slower paced practice where poses are held for a longer period of time, allowing for increased circulation and improved flexibility. Our Yin practice is complemented by the use of the Yoga Therapy Balls for self-massage.  This is a relaxed practice that is designed to de-stress and recharge your body and mind. This class is a perfect complement to a more active yoga and/or exercise routine, and is appropriate for all levels.

iRest. iRest is a 10-step protocol or sequence of tools in which we somatically meet, greet and listen deeply to everything that arises moment to moment just as it is. It is a practice of connecting with and remembering that which is already whole, healed, and ‘well’, no matter our current circumstance. iRest is simple to learn and easy to practice. No previous meditation experience is required. iRest is a guided meditation that is practiced in a comfortable, usually lying down or sitting up, position.  Open to all levels. FIRST CLASS FREE.

MONTHLY MEDITATION GROUP – Steve.  This is an opportunity to practice meditation in a serene setting with like-minded souls, guided by experienced practitioners.  We will generally start with a guided mediation, will break up the periods of sitting into manageable chunks, and will include walking meditation or other practices as determined by the group leader. This group is FREE, open to all levels, and requires no meditation experience.  You can choose to sit on cushions or in chairs, provided by the studio.
THE MEDITATION GROUP MEETS THE LAST SUNDAY OF EVERY MONTH FROM 6 to 7 P.M. AT JAMES RIVER YOGA STUDIO.

SOUND BATH – Lyndsey Hoyle.  A Sound Bath is a full-body listening experience that intentionally uses sound to invite gentle yet powerful therapeutic and restorative processes to nurture the mind and body.  The experience begins with each person lying down or seated in a comfortable position, often with a blanket and an eye mask. After a few minutes of guided focus on the breath, the remainder of the experience is filled with different sounds and frequencies being introduced in succession. The sounds are created by a variety of instruments including singing bowls, chimes, Native American drums, rattles and nature sounds. When you sink into a Sound Bath and guide your awareness to your listening, you allow your brain waves to slow, shifting from a more active state to a more relaxed state, or even a dreamlike state. The sounds introduced during a Sound Bath are an invitation into a deeper state of consciousness, an opportunity to unplug from external stimuli and to gain perspective on what’s going on within you. The goal of the experience is to invite deep rest and relaxation, and explore self-inquiry and self-discovery.  SOUNDBATH CLASS MEETS THE SECOND SUNDAY OF EVERY MONTH FROM 7 TO 8 P.M.  CONTACT LYNDSEY TO REGISTER.  Please remember to bring your own mat, blanket and whatever other supplies you need to be comfortable.
